Somatic Based Therapy

Somatic Therapy or Body-Centered Therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between the mind and body to promote healing and overall wellness. It recognizes that psychological issues and traumatic experiences are stored not only in the mind but also in the body. It aims to release and resolve these stored physical sensations and emotions to support recovery from trauma, stress, and other mental health challenges.

Somatic Therapy acknowledges that the body holds valuable information and can serve as a resource for healing. Emotions are generated from the Limbic system in the brain and communicated throughout the body by way of the Vagus nerve, causing the energy when feel as physical sensations. Our nervous system can sometimes respond with a fight, flight, or freeze reaction when it senses a threat, which is a natural survival mechanism. When this happens, energy can become trapped or incomplete in our bodies. Somatic Therapy aims to help complete these instinctual responses and discharge the stored energy associated with the traumatic experience.

Techniques such as Brainspotting, EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing), breathwork, movement, and mindful body connection can support you in developing body awareness, releasing stored tension, and accessing inner resources for healing and self-regulation.
